Tooth Colored Fillings
Fillings are used to fill cavities and other openings in teeth including fractures, cracks, breaks, chips, and wear from grinding in order to protect a natural tooth from further damage or decay. Fillings strengthen teeth, restore function, and seal out harmful bacteria and other contaminants which can lead to infection if left untreated. In some cases, they may also be used to cosmetically enhance the color, size, or shape of a tooth. Tooth colored fillings are designed to match the natural color of the tooth for a seamless smile. These natural colored fillings are sometimes referred to as composite resins, tooth-colored composites, and white fillings. In addition to restoring the health and function of your teeth, they are also natural looking to ensure you maintain a natural appearance.
Advantages of Tooth Colored Fillings
Fillings cure the health-related issues associated with damaged teeth and also enhance the tooth’s aesthetic qualities in a way that looks and feels natural. These types of aesthetic fillings are especially ideal for front-facing or visible teeth, as the color and material is carefully selected to match the shade and appearance of your natural teeth. Tooth colored fillings are durable as they are chemically bonded to the natural tooth structure. They also often require less of the tooth’s structure be removed in preparation for the filling compared to other filling types. The more of the natural tooth that remains, the easier it is to fill in cavities, as well as help to maintain your natural smile.
The Placement Process
First, the tooth and surrounding area are numbed using a local anesthetic. Decay is removed from the damaged area and then the cavity is cleansed of bacteria and debris. A liner may be placed to shield nerves and the tooth’s root from damage. After the cavity is thoroughly cleaned, your dentist will fill the cavity layer by layer using a composite resin material. The material is shaped to ensure a natural look, then a light is used to cure the filling, setting the material firmly into place. After the filling material is set and adjusted, your tooth will be polished to a brilliant shine. Tooth colored fillings are durable and can last from five to seven years if properly cared for. Good habits to prolong the life of these fillings include regular brushing and flossing and dental checkups. We will discuss how to best care for your fillings during your visit, as well as address in questions you may have.
