Dental veneers are thin shells that are adhered to the front of teeth. They are used for cosmetic purposes to alter the size, shape, length or color of a tooth. A veneer may also be used on misaligned teeth or to fill a gap between teeth.
Porcelain is the most common material used for this cosmetic dental procedure. Porcelain veneers resist stains better than resin veneers, match natural teeth better than other materials, and are more affordable than other options.
The Placement Process
Before any procedure is decided upon, we will arrange a consultation with you to determine whether or not veneers are the best option for your dental needs and budget. In order to make this assessment, an impression or x-ray will be taken in our office and all options will be identified to improve the appearance of your teeth. If your teeth are healthy enough to support dental veneers and they seem like the best option for you, an appointment for placement can be made.
Before placing veneers, the tooth or teeth are cleaned and scraped in preparation for placement. A local anesthesia is used to numb the area being treated and then a small portion of enamel is removed from the tooth receiving the veneer. Impressions are made of each tooth to ensure a custom fit. A temporary veneer may be placed while we create your permanent custom-designed veneer.
During your next visit, your teeth are cleaned and shaped before the permanent veneer is placed. Dental cement bonds the tooth to the veneer and a special light hardens the cement, securing the veneer in place. If any adjustments are needed, we will make them at this time. We will follow up with you to ensure your veneer fits comfortably.
Porcelain veneers are cared for much like regular teeth. Brush and floss twice daily to prolong the life of your dental veneers and come in for regular dental checkups. If cared for properly, porcelain veneers can last up to 10 years before replacements are required.
If you have chipped, discolored, or misshapen teeth, porcelain dental veneers may be the right solution for you. Contact us today to schedule your initial consultation with us and be well on your way to a brilliant, beautiful smile tomorrow!
